How to Keep Your Blonde Hair Looking Like you Just Stepped Out of the Salon Chair

I absolutely love being a blonde. It really is more fun!! Unfortunately for me I am not a natural blonde, so this means I get blonde foils in my hair about once every 5 weeks. Obviously a little bit of damage is going to be unavoidable when bleach is being used. This is why amazing products and a good hair care routine are completely essential. I know first hand how hard it can be to keep up with and maintain healthy, light, and shiny blonde hair. It takes a little work but the benefits and results are TOTALLY worth it. Here are ten things I do to keep my blonde main super light, healthy, and long:

  • Find a Hairdresser that is Talented and Experienced with Blondes- Also, make sure they are using quality products that wont be too damaging to your hair. Trusting your hair stylist is huge and essential for someone who will be visiting the salon as many times as us blondies do. My hair stylist uses Goldwell Silk Lift. This has oils in it that moisturize it while the color is being lifted and minimize damage to your hair, and Goldwell is also a high quality professional hair color brand especially for blondes.
  • Make Sure to Keep up with the Trims- Trimming your hair help it to continue to grow long and healthy with out the icky dead split ends that are unavoidable when you bleach your hair. if you keep up with regular teeny tiny trims of your ends you will avoid needing to trim off a larger amount of your ends because it will keep them totally healthy. My hair dresser know I like my trims to be undetectable to the eye but leaving my hair softer to the touch. If you keep up with getting trims about every 5-7 weeks it will keep your hair looking long, silky and healthfully beautiful!
  • Use Gentile, Natural, and High Quality Shampoo and Conditioner- This is probably the most important tip I have for maintaining blonde hair. Lighting your hair at the salon every month is not enough to maintain the beautiful blondness. You need to use products at home that are designed just for blondes in order to combat any brassiness and dryness in-between salon visits. In addition to those products you NEED to make sure anything you are putting in your hair is color safe and all natural. The more natural the better. Do not fall for marketing ploys on products that claim to be color safe but actually contain a bunch of harmful additives and chemicals. This means using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner always. Products with sulfates in them can dry out and damage your hair along with striping away the color causing it to look brassy and dull. In addition to damaging your hair sulfates can also irritate your scalp. You don’t want to spend so much time in money at the salon only to ruin it with your hair products. The everyday sulfate free shampoo and conditioners I love are Livingproof, I like to mix it up with their Firzz free line and their moisturizing line. I usually use the fizz free shampoo and moisturizing conditioner. The Livingproof products are also paraben free which is very important to me. I have found both of these to be very very nourishing and help immensely with smoothness and maintaining overall hair health. The choice of hair products really is so essential to maintaining beautiful hair color.
  • Use a Purple Shampoo Once a Week- If you want to tone away any brassiness from your blonde you need to use a purple shampoo regularly. A really great one that I use is Rusk Sensories. Purple shampoos are great because purple is opposite of yellow on the color wheel, so when you use a purple shampoo it will counteract the yellow and get rid of any brassiness in your hair. I like this particular one because it is more gentile and not so drying as some of the other ones I have tried. It also smells really really good and has a lavender chamomile base which naturally helps keep your blonde light and bright. I would only recommend leaving it in for 5 min or less, because with any purple shampoo or conditioner if you leave it in to long you hair can be tinted purple (not permanently but still a mistake you may want to avoid). Also don’t go over board with using it too much. Your hair only needs a purple shampoo about once a week at most.
  • Use a Heat Protector- If you are like me you apply a lot of heat to your hair. The blow dryer, straightener, & hair curler are all tools I commonly grab when styling my hair. Your hair is delicate, especially if it has been colored or bleached, and you want to make sure to care for it and protect it when you are styling. I use a really good heat protector which is It is Caviar Anti-Aging Perfect Iron Spray which protects up to 450 degrees and is Sulfate, Phthalate, Synthetic Dye, GMO, and Paraben Free so I know I'm not damaging my hair while trying to protect it. I also always make sure to keep the temp at just 350 degrees or less to minimize heat damage. Heat can not only damage your hair but it can damage the color as well so it is super important to keep that heat low and that protector on!
  • Don't Style Your Hair Everyday- Although you are using a lower temp and using a protector it is still bad for your hair to style it every day. To minimize the amount of heat tools applied to your hair wash and style at lease every other day and use dry shampoo on the off days.
  • Take Hair Vitamins and Eat Foods that are Beneficial to your Hair Health- This is a really important tip and truly does make a noticeable difference. When you are eating the right type of food to nourish your hair and keeping up with those hair growing vitamins you truly do see a difference and quickly! It helps to thicken your hair have it looking shiny and healthy and t really does help it to grow quicker as well. the vitamins I like are the Hair Skin and Nails Vitamins and you can find them at any store that sells vitamins. Some plant based foods to make sure to include in your diet everyday that will help you hair are Spinach, Strawberries, Sweet Potatoes, Almonds, Avacado, Chia Seeds, Beans, Whole Grain Oats, and Carrots.
  • Do Regular Conditioning Treatments- Conditioning treatments really help my hair. I have been obsessed with them every since I was younger. I make sure to do at least one a week, usually every Sunday night. The one I use is HASK Keratin Protein Smoothing Deep Conditioner. It is super natural and cruelty free. It is also very inexpensive at less than $2.00 a mask. It leaves my hair feeling soso soft and healthy and smelling great. However, make sure you don't over deep condition, 1-2 times per week is plenty.
  • Use a Hair Oil Safe for Blonde Hair- Bleach drys out you hair, so you need to replenish some of that lost moisture with a natural oil. Make sure you don't use one that can darken the color, you want to keep your blonde remaining light and glowing. I like to use Moroccan Oil Light which was formulated especially for lighter hair so that it will not darken it.
  • Drink Plenty of Water- Your hair is like flower petals, it need water! If you are dehydrated your hair cannot grow. Drinking planty of water will have your hair looking super healthy, and feeling strong, and it will aid in ensuring your hair can grow quickly.

If you keep up with your hair maintenance and use really good quality products like these you can totally make sure your blonde stays as bright and beautiful as the day you walked out of the salon!
