How to Motivate Yourself to Fall in Love with Working Out

I used to dread working out and going to the gym. It seemed like a just another chore I had to do after a long day of work, and most times when I would plan to do it I just couldn’t motivate my self enough to actually get to the gym. Now I hate missing the gym and actually get excited to go. Starting out is the hardest part but once you actually begin you will start to see and feel all of the benefits, and eventually you will become totally addicted.

  • To start out you will need to do your research- watch YouTube videos of different exercises to do and look on Pinterest at different exercises. When I was new to working out it helped me a lot to have pictures on my Pinterest I could look at on my phone to know what to do. You can also use write out or type out a list in your phone notes of the exercises you want to do. This way you won’t end up sitting in the middle of the gym on a yoga mat looking totally lost, trust me I’ve been there!
  • Next remember to push yourself, but just not too hard. There will be times when working out is literally the absolute last thing you want to do. Maybe it was a really long busy day and it’s snowing out and the only thing you want to do is go home and curl up in your bed and watch Netflix. No, you need to push yourself to go, even if it’s only a 30 minute workout you will be so glad that you did it and feel great about yourself after. But you also need to remember that it’s okay to take breaks and take days off. You don’t need to be in the gym 7 days a week, allow yourself to rest and be rewarded after a couple of days of hard work, just don’t take too many days off that you have to start the process all over again!
  • Now this isn’t a necessity for getting into working out but it’s a definite motivator, and that’s to invest in really cute workout clothing!
  • You will need to set goals for yourself, and make them achievable goals. If your goal is unrealistic you will get frustrated when you don’t seem to be making progress towards it. Don’t be too focused on numbers. Try not to make your goal about how many pounds you want to loose. It is easy to focus too much about the number you see on the scale, and get disappointed and discouraged if you aren’t losing as much weight as you’d like as quickly as you’d like. Instead try to set goals like “I will workout four days a week every week this month”.
  • Create a home workout routine. We’re all busy and some days going to the gym just isn’t realistic. One of the hardest parts of getting into working out is finding time to do it especially if you have a full time job or are in school. This is where getting really good at burning those calories from home comes into play. You can get a perfectly good workout at home, and save yourself some time.
  • Lastly, DONT compare yourself to others. This is your journey and these are your goals. Keep track of your own progress. Yes, there are perfectly fit girls on Instagram that you could compare your results to, but don’t do it. It is not fair to yourself, everyone has a different body type and is at a different point in their fitness journey. Instead use them for motivation and information. A lot of people who promote themselves online as being into fitness share some really helpful tips and information about eating healthy and working out.
